A long, long time ago(lotl), beneath the five suns that first illuminated the world, the river goddess Chalchuihtlicue gave life to axolotls, who lived peacefully under the waves of Lake Chalco.

But something strange is happening...

An evil god has descended upon the underworld kingdom of Lake Chalco! Luckily, the brave Xolotl and his merry band of friends are ready to journey through treacherous waters and perform the ancient cleansing rite. 

You only have one chance - it's time to save the axolotls!

Golotl is an Aztec-inspired puzzle game created in 72 hours for the ACM Studio Jam! It features 4 axolotls, each loosely based on the Aztec god of a corresponding direction, and you, the 5th - Xolotl himself! Navigate through local ponds of powerful whirlpools, dangerous currents, and polluted obstacles to find mystical jade artifacts. With them, you can complete the ritual to cleanse Lake Chalco of its evil cursed spirit and save the local axolotl population!

Due to the submission deadline, our game has a few minor bugs in the introduction and conclusion cutscenes! For a complete experience, this is what is supposed to be displayed:

Introduction

Once upon a time, in the watery depths under the light of the Five Suns, there lived the Lake Chalco Kingdom, where axolotls resided in peace and harmony.

But one day, a great evil god hurtled to the bottom of the lake! Everything it touched became corrupted, and numerous other strange hazards and calamities befell the kingdom in its wake. One by one the axolotls began to fall ill, and the great kingdom was thrown into turmoil.

“Whatever shall we do?” the citizens cried. “It is only a matter of time before we all perish to the wrath of this evil spirit! Who will save us all?”

One axolotl, the descendent of a long line of explorers, stepped up. “My friends and I will go!” he declared. “If there is only one chance left to save our people, then we will take on that challenge!”

His name was Xolotl.

Conclusion

Finally, all the artifacts are assembled on the altar! As the serpent of corruption closes in, the altar begins to glow, and light shoots out towards the spirit!

After a few blinding moments, it is over. Before you stands an entirely different figure: a green eyed woman with flowing dark hair. She addresses you: “Thank you, brave axolotls, for saving me from the effects of the accumulated pollution! I’ll have to deal with the humans that are responsible…”

“Nevermind that. Return home, dear axolotls, and enjoy your lives once more!”

Thus, after a long adventure of navigating treacherous waters and uncovering lost relics, Xolotl and his crew finally restored the corrupted Chalchiuhtlicue to her former glory and saved the  Lake Chalco Kingdom!
